My Friday Thought: Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today, because before you know it 20 years have passed and you're nowhere near as fit. Arthur's seat and technology have a link in my head

Having done Arthur's seat with my six year old last weekend, 20 plus years after saying 'I will do that next time', this saying was never truer. This reminded me that the same can be said for technology.

Technology debt, can come in multiple forms resulting in the need for a refactor, an update to documentation, a re-architecture, and much more. Leaning into that early and doing it soon often means the cost to complete it is small (either in time or costs), delaying until later often comes at a higher costs.

Why does technology often have a project to upgrade/reinvent a solution? Typically because what was delivered X number of years ago hasn't had the love and investment into it to ensure it is able to continue to deliver - the cost to get it up to standard is too much and starting over is easier.

Arthur's seat was harder work than it would have been in my 20's, plus having done it before might have made it generally easier as the paved road would have been known. Either way being able to reflect on a break and time with my child & link it back to work is always my favourite kind of Friday Thought. Celebrate every rock you pass on the way to your destination.
