But When

But When

My Friday Thought: "Its not a matter of if, but when.." The starlight express song playing in my head, but this is so true for many technological events

If we have [insert event] can we handle it? The question here is when the events (e.g. AZ outage, zero-day vulnerability) happen can we deal with it in the right manner? Changing the focus from if the [worse case] happens to when it happens. This refocuses you to consider the likelihood and the impact, a little like risk matrix scoring, however, the question then should be so what.

You need to plan in for the when it happens and grow to be ready for it. It might not be perfect, but the consideration of what you would do is an important starting point. Cross-cutting/Chaos days allows teams to consider and improve on things, which can often be forgotten underneath the everyday requirements.
