Failure Points

My Friday Thought: Recognising your single points of failure technical, policy and people is critical if you want to remove them

Technical Points of Failure: This includes components where there are only one. So single:-

• severs
• network stitches
• sensors
• network provider

Policy Points of Failure: This is more causing the above due to a policy decision over a technical limitation.

• Only permitted to be within one region
• Only permitted to be within one cloud provider
• Only one team permitted to do all back-ups

People Points of Failure: This is often harder to spot, or it is recognised but nothing is actively done to change it. It can be there is a feeling within leadership it has been removed, but on the ground everything still flows through one person.

Sometimes single points of failure are avoidable, but often they are known and accepted. We should try to change acceptance.
