My Friday thought: Learning to code is like learning another language - difficult!

But, do you need to know this to be good in a non-hands on engineering role?

There are so great leaders without this, however, for me above and beyond giving me technical ability (which isn’t much) this has enabled me to have an appreciation of just how valuable strong technical members of a team are.

It has provided me an improved:

  • questioning and probing capability
  • ability to translate technically impacts into business drivers
  • understanding of hidden engineering components
  • focus on secuitry, operability and maintainability
  • drive to provide technical cohesion across multiple teams

and so much more, all of which I believe lead to enriched outcomes.

So do you need to be technical? No, but it certainly helps to have technical understanding when leading very technical heavy engineering teams (e.g Platforms)
