Pride 2026

My Friday Thought: Pride month isn't about an organisation/person putting the rainbow in their logo/profile - its about demonstrating your support through equal policy and a yearlong support for the challenges that many minorities groups face.

I was born, just after being gay was decriminalised, but we still had Section 28 during my education and there was a very binary view (in my opinion) of you being gay or not and having to choose your side which was even true through my university years where clubs/bars also represented this way of thinking.

Thankfully the giants who fought before I was born and the many who have come since have shifted the pendulum towards a better society, however, sadly LGBTQ+ still needs representation and pride month is still needed. Rights aren't equal, society still isn't fair and people are still fighting for the rights to be themselves.

So June is great to see the flags of support, but for me actions speak louder than words so organisations and people need to ensure that they are actually supportive and not just highlighting a nice image because its June.

Given the current media on the 'T' of pride - our trans community it is worth supporting/reading up not in our name and EHRC

Additional if what LGBTQ+ can be written for and understand by children anyone can understand:

Lesbian: Love and affection between two girls who share a connection

Gay: A girl who likes girls or a guy who likes guys

Bisexual: I likes boys and girls

Trans: Someone who lives their life as the gender they know is innate

Queer (gender-queer): Meant to be an inclusive term to show pride and unite as a group, however, there are some people who dislike the term.

+: And the vast array of all the additions; gender identities and sexual orientations

Ally - A friend who is there to stand up for you with strength, love and care.  You?

See here for last year's where I discussed a few more of the gender identities, taken from my favour book The GayBC's
