Governance

My Friday Thought: No rules and there is chaos, too many rules though doesn't mean order.

Rules within tech are vital to ensure:

• Minimum coding standards
• Establishment of a common understanding
• Reduction of technical debt
• Alignment to legal/secuitry standards

Rules within tech can:

• Increase cognitive load
• Prevent innovation
• Lead to increased costs
• Cause a focus on box ticking over value

What we need is balance. Guardrails to ensure that we have stability, security, efficiency and consistency. Governance that allows difference, flexibility, and innovation.

Ultimately we need governance which is visible providing a rational and written to enable engineers to focus on delivery of benefits, with the empowerment for change and recognition of unique cases.
